Notes for STEPHEN M. HASTINGS, JR: The following is a letter from Cathye Hendrix ( hendrixj@nichols.com ) of Huntsville, Alabama. 20 July 1998 (S.B.)

Stephen Hastings: Stephen was a Methodist minister. He was in the Confederate army, but he didn't believe that he could "bear arms". Instead, he ran a ferry boat across the Mississippi River at Memphis. The ferry took Confederate soldiers across the river. Following the war, Stephen continued his work as a minister. I have found several records where he performed weddings in Jackson County in 1880-81.

Stephen was married to a woman whose last name was Shankles. I can't find her name. Stephen married Hannah Shankles (the niece of his first wife) and created a disturbance in the family because he had a house full of children and Hannah was twenty years younger than he was.

After the war Stephen ran a tanning yard and a black smith shop. His business was located on Crow Creek near the Alabama Tennessee state line. This place was known as"tan yard springs". While he worked at the "tan yard" he repaired wagons for the people who were going west and traded with the Indians in the area.

In later life he went blind, probably because of cataract. Even with this difficulty he managed to take his wagon and team of horses down the mountain to Larkinsville. He would do his business, visit then get back in his wagon and his team of horses would take him home. During the time that he was blind, he lived with his son Joe and his three grandchildren: Maggie Lee Mammie Hastings, William Arthur McKinley, and Susie Fannie (my grandmother:). These three grandchildren would lead Stephen where ever they needed to go. He would keep up.

Stephen is buried in Jackson County near the site of his family home. The name of the cemetery is Golden or Winegar, (depending on which name you may be familiar with.) Stephen is buried next to his wife Hannah. They share a home made marker (probably made by there son Joe). The marker is old and simple but beautiful to me. They are surrounded by other family members. Unfortunately, several of these people were not identified and passed on to other generations. We just know that they are there. If Stephen's first wife is buried in this cemetery, we don't know it.

Sandy, I don't know the name of Stephen Hastings parents. I know that he had a brother named Thomas. I also know that they came from around Winchester, Tennessee. A Jackson County historian told me that the Hastings family have been in Jackson County for many years.

I know that the huge list of children for Stephen and Hannah seems to be unbelievable. Some of the children are from Stephen's first wife. I got that information from a Hastings relative who is a generation before me. When I interviewed this woman she said she knew my aunt (I took her with me.) and I were Hastings the minute we got out of the car because we looked like Hastings. Everyone in my immediate Hastings family has strawberry blonde to red hair and we have fair complexions. I tell you this because I have found that family resemblance can be important.

I have discovered that the man who wrote "Rock of Ages" was named Thomas Hastings. I am trying to find out information about this man. I want to know if he is my Thomas Hastings. Are you aware of this?

I know this is long. I tried to give you enough information to work with. Please let me hear from you. I really feel like we are working on the same family. Let me know if you find a match or not.

Talk to you later. I look forward to hearing from you.

Everton Paper (not dated) Obituary

Martha McCord Hastings, born 14 January 1817 in old Franklin Co., Tennessee, on Duck river near what is known as the old Historic Fort, died 10 April 1908, aged 91 years, 2 months and 26 days. Married Isham B. Bailey in the fall of 1834, (A Methodist Minister) of children six girls and one boy, died 1845. (Isham Bailey) Martha McCord Hastings Bailey married John Baker in 1847. Eight children, three girls and five boys. John Baker died 15 February 1886. Sister of W. T. Hastings of Everton, she died at the home of her daughter, Mrs Mary Swift Everton. Besides her fifteen children she raised six step-children. -------------------------------

Martha is living with her daughter Delphia Bailey Irby in 1900 Dade Co., South Twp, household 190. She states she's had 15 children and 11 are living.

That gives us 7 BAILEY children and 8 BAKER children. Did the 2 Bailey girls die in the typhoid epedemic of 1845 in Yalobusha / Chickasaw Counties in Mississippi? _______________ From original Obituary

Martha McCord Hastings was born in old Franklin Co., Tennessee, on Duck River near what is known as the old historic Fort, January 14th, 1817. She made a profession of religion at the age of 16 and... united with the Methodist church, in which she lived a faithful, honorable and constant member until her death which occured at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary Swift, in Everton, Mo, April 10, 1908, aged 91 years, 2 months and 26 days.

In the fall of 1834 she was married to Ishom B. Bailey. Of this union there were born seven children, six girls and one boy. Her husband, brother Bailey, who was a minister in the Methodist church, died in 1845; and in 1847 she was married to John Baker. Of this union eight children were born, five boys and three girls. (???) February 15, 1886 (John Baker's death date) a widow for the second time. She was the mother of fifteen children, and raised six step-children.

Of her descendants there were seventy-seven grandchildren, one hundred and one great-grandchildren and thirty six great-great grandchildren. Of her fifteen children, there are nine who survive her. Of the six step-children four are yet living. She was a sister to our old friend and townsman, W. T. Hastings, so well and favorably known throughout the county. (Continues her good character.) ___________________________________________ While some researcher's theorize that the Baker clan left Mississippi in the dead of winter for Missouri has always been one that I doubted. To quote a fine researcher, "Mary Bailey Swifts stories (via Clara Baker Cook), of the children happily trudging along doesn't sound like December and January in Missouri. More likely they left Mississippi in early spring of 1851 in order to get to Lawrence County in time to put in a crop." Missouri Ann Baker was most likely born in Mississippi and not in the wagon along the way as claimed. Census records and Missouri's death certificate agree that she was born in Mississippi. While old legends are the back bone of a family history, memories and exact dates fade with years and the telling. While there's truth in the story, you have to sort it from the chaff.

Note.... To add a little more to the story .. in 1860 Martha's only son by Isham Bailey is living in the home of John H. Hastings in Lawrence County, Missouri. After years of wondering what the relationship was I've finally untangled it. This John H. Hastings was the son of Joseph Hastings and Sarah "Sally" Bailey. Joseph was the brother of Martha's father John Holloway Hastings and her uncle, Joseph died of cholera in 1833 leaving Sally with 6 small children to raise. Sally Bailey was the sister of Martha's first husband Isham Bailey, making her a sister in law and her children nephews and nieces. While this John H. Hastings is her first cousin through her father, he is also her Nephew through her first husband Isham Bailey. Sooo, Franklin Bailey is living with his 1st cousin through the Bailey's and 1st cousin once removed through the Hastings. (Are we confused yet?? S. B. 8 Aug 1998) __________________ Census: 1850 , Chickasaw Co. MS

Martha married Isham B. BAILEY, son of Hayman BAILEY and Edith STANPHILL, on 7 Sep 1834 in Chickasaw Co., Mississippi. (Isham B. BAILEY was born on 28 Jun 1816 in Franklin Co., Tennessee and died on 15 Jul 1845 in Chickasaw Co., Mississippi.) The cause of death was Typhoid Fever.
Notes for ISHAM B BAILEY: During the summer of 1845 .. June through September .. Typhoid spread through northern Mississippi, taking untold lives. Isham Bailey and three of his siblings fell victim as likely did two little daughters of Isham and Martha Hastings Bailey. Isham B Bailey was a Methodist Minister, living in Chickasaw County, Mississippi by 1841.

1841 Chickasaw Co., Mississippi

Males 1 between age 21-45 (Isham)

Females I over 16 (Martha age 24) 2 under 16 (Sarah Ann age 5 & Delphia T. age 23 months)

Isham was the son of Hayman and Edith Stanphill Bailey, of Somerset County, Maryland and became a Methodist Minister, taking his beliefs into the wilds of upper Mississippi in a time when the threat of Indian attack was still very real. His thought were likely to bring "salvation" to the natives of this land. As in so many cases during the spring and summer months of the deep south the dreaded Typhoid was prevalent. Between May and June Isham saw the death of three of his siblings, Fannie, John and James. His own death occurred 15 July 1845. As Martha's obituary says she had six daughters and one son it is likely two of these little daughters were also typhoid victims. Little else is known of Isham but his life must have left an impact on Martha as she named her first son by John Baker, Isham Porter Baker. John Baker must have been very open minded or also had a close relationship with the Bailey family to have allowed the naming of Isham after Martha's deceased husband.

They had the following children:
+ 129 F    i. Sarah Ann Margaret BAILEY was born on 6 Jul 1835 in Chickasaw Co., Mississippi and died on 26 Dec 1908 in Purley, Franklin Co., Texas
+ 130 F    ii. Delpha Thomas BAILEY was born on 1 May 1837 in Chickasaw Co., Mississippi, died on 18 May 1909 in Dade Co., Missouri and was buried in May 1909 in Shiloh Cemetery, Dade Co., Missouri
131 M    iii. Franklin K. BAILEY was born on 9 Nov 1841 in Mississippi and died About 1864.
To add a little more to the story..in 1860 Martha's only son by Isham Bailey is living in the home of John H. Hasting in Lawerence County, Missouri. After years of wondering what the relationship was I've finally untangled it. This John H. Hastings was the son of Joseph Hastings and Sarah "Sally" Bailey. Joseph was the brother of Martha's father John Halloway Hastings and her uncle. Joseph died of cholera in 1833 leaving Sally with 6 small childrento raise. Sally Bailey was the sister of Martha's first husband Isham Bailey, making her a sister in law and her children nephews and nieces. While this John H. Hasting is her first cousin through her father, he is also her nephew through her first husband Isham Bailey. Sooo,Franklin Bailey is living with his 1st cousin through the Bailey's and the 1st cousin once removed through the Hastings. ( Are we confused yet ?? S.B. Aug. 8, 1998 )

Frank was not married.. during the Civil War he was killed by bushwhackers, he was wearing a white shirt making him an easy target.

+ 132 F    iv. Mary Winnie BAILEY was born on 18 Nov 1843 in Yalobusha Co., Mississippi, died on 11 Sep 1925 in Dade Co., Missouri and was buried in Sep 1925 in Shiloh Cemetery, Dade Co., Missouri
+ 133 F    v. Isa Louisa F. BAILEY was born on 31 Oct 1845 in Yalobusha Co., Mississippi, died on 4 Nov 1903 in Dade Co., Missouri and was buried in Nov 1903 in Shiloh Cemetery, Dade Co., Missouri
Martha also married John BAKER, son of John Zachariah BAKER and Unknown, in 1847 in Chickasaw Co., Mississippi. (John BAKER was born on 9 Dec 1815 in Jackson Co., Alabama, died on 15 Feb 1886 in Sycamore Cemetery, Lawrence Co., Missouri and was buried in Feb 1886 in Sycamore Cemetery, Lawrence Co., Missouri.)

At the time of his death John and Martha's small farm provided them with the comforts of an early day farm life. ____________________________________________________________ ______________ __________ BAKER'S in early Alabama ....

John Baker was born, according to records, 1815 Jackson County, Alabama. Jackson county wasn't formed until 1819 making that area Madison County and part of Mississippi Territory. In an 1809 census for Madison County there is only one Baker family. That was >>

JOHN BAKER, (this John would have been born about 1770) in his household was 2 males under 21; 3 males over 21; 4 females under 21; 1 female over 21. This gives us likely 8 children, 4 males, 4 females or either 6 children with three adult males in the house. I find a marriage JOHN BAKER to a Nancy Wilson 17 Apr 1811, Madison County and a JOSEPH BAKER to Nancy Ellison 26 Feb 1812, Madison County. Either one of these COULD be the parents of our JOHN BAKER born in 1815.

I believe John & Joseph Baker are likely brothers & possibly sons of the elder John Baker. Need to check wills & probate. According to the 1810 Taxable Property List for Madison County, Mississippi Territory there were: John Baker; William Baker; & William Baker paying taxes.

Madison County, Alabama & Lincoln County, Tennessee are bordering counties, John Baker's first wife, Nancy Margaret Isbell was born Lincoln County, Tennessee. They married about 1837 but can not find a marriage for that time period. John & Margaret were in Chickasaw County, Mississippi by 1840 and the birth of their son Zachariah. Oldest son William was born in Alabama about 1838. Margaret either died after the birth of Louisa 23 December 1846, or shortly after, in Chickasaw County. John marries widow Martha McCord Hastings Bailey about 1847, presumably in Mississippi. They are in 1850 Chickasaw County, though some of the Bailey children were born in Yalobusha County. _________________________ Found in the COWART Old Land Records of Madison Co. William Thomas Hastings it seems wore many hats ... farmer - Justice of the Peace - Notary Public - Stone Mason - Blacksmith.

He served with Company I 15th Regiment Missouri Calvery during the Civil War.

The following was taken from 1889 Goodspeed History of Polk, Cedar, Dade and Barton Counties in Missouri. I give it verbatim even though dates may vary with other sources of information:

William T. Hastings, farmer and notary public of Rock Prairie Township, was born in Jackson Co., Alabama in 1826. His father was John H. Hastings, born in North Carolina in 1793, who married Margaret Gentry, a native of Tennessee, who died when the subject of this sketch was three weeks old.

Mr John H. Hastings married the second time in Tennessee and in 1846 came to Greene Co., Missouri. He was of a roving nature, and lived in Texas at the breaking out of the war, and afterwards went to Kansas where in died in 1866. He was a son of John Hastings, who was born in England, and served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War, dying in Tennessee about 1831. William T. was the last of four sons and one daughter.

He was raised by an aunt in Tennessee till he was twelve years of age, and received but little education. He afterward lived with his father in Alabama and Mississippi. He was married in 1844 to Isabella Massengale, who was born in Madison Co., Alabama and died in 1874 in Dade County. They had a family of ten children, of whom four sons and one daughter are living.

He married the second time , 8 December 1874 to Serena C. Cotner, daughter of Daniel and Minta Cotner, early settlers of Dade Co., where Mr Cotner, a saddler, lived till his death. Mrs Cotner dying in Newton County. By this wife he had two children.

Mr Hastings came to Greene Co., Missouri in 1851 and in 1853 to Dade Co., where he has 240 acres of land near Everton, and where he has since lived. He has aquired this land by his own efforts and hard work. He served about twelve months in 1862 and 1863 in Company L 72nd Enrolled Missouri Militia, then twenty months in Company I 15th United States Missouri Calvary, traveling all over Southwest Missouri as commissary sergeant, employing many scouts.

He served as justice of the peace from 1874 to 1886, with satisfaction, with but two appeals to higher courts, and they were compromised before trial. He has been notary public since 1886. He has been a Democrat in politics all his life, the first president he voted for being Polk, in 1844. He is a member of Washington Lodge No. 87, A.F. & A.M. at Greenfield, having been made a Mason in 1850, in Mississippi He is, and for about fifty years has been, a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, both his wives also being members. When quite young Mr Hastings learned the trades of blacksmith and stone mason, following them many years in connection with farming.

Mary married Henry C. JORDON on 12 Aug 1863 in Texas. (Henry C. JORDON was born in Missouri and died Before 1888.)
They had the following children:
+ 163 F    i. Mary "Mollie" JORDON was born About 1866 in Hunt Co., Texas and died in Jul 1888 in El Paso, El Paso Co., Texas
Mary also married Isom Conway FRIER, son of Enoch FRIER and James LATHAM, in Jul 1868 in Fayetteville, Washington Co., Arkansas. (Isom Conway FRIER was born on 11 Aug 1842 in Pike Co., Missouri, died on 2 Feb 1921 in Abilene, Taylor Co. Texas and was buried in Merkle, Taylor Co., Texas.)
History of Isom Conway Frier by Hilga Judd Frier...

Isom Conway Frier was born 11 Aug 1842 in Pike County, Missouri. He was the son of Enoch frier and his wife Jane. The family had moved to Missouri from Arkansas to be near Enoch's father James K. Frier who was very ill at the time. After the death of James K. in early 1843, Enoch and his family moved back to Elkins, Clark County, Arkansas. Enoch died there in 1848. The 1850 census of Arkansas listed Isom and his brother James as living with older brother Thomas Jefferson Frier and his wife Ellen Lisenby; two younger sisters, Nancy and Rebecca, were living with oldest sister, Laurena Frier Starks. Their mother Jane, is said to have married (Joshua Murrah) Joseph Murray and gone to Navarro Co, Texas about 1858. By 1860, most of the family had moved to Collin County, Texas. Isom, James & Rebecca are listed as living with John M Lisenby & Laurena Frier. Nancy is not listed and may have died as research has found no other trace of her.

Isom joined the Confederate army in February 1862. He became very ill after standing guard in bad weather in the winter of 1862-63. His brother James nad Robert Weaver went to his camp and took him to his sister Laurena's home in McKinney, Texas, where she nursed him back to health. He did not return to his outfit. In the fall of 1863 he joined the Union rmy at Little Rock, AR and was assigned to the 10th Illinois Cav. He had several bouts of illness, but was able to continue in the service and was given an honourable discharge at San Antonio, Texas in 1865.

During the next two years he found work in many areas. He was good at riding and driving horses, and worked as a teamster in such places as Brady, McKinney, Farmersville, and Boren, texas. He married Josephine Boren, 20 June 1867 in Hunt county, Texas. He often drove cattle into Missouri. He states in his pension application that he married Mary Jane Hastings jordon, 5 July 1868 in Arkansas. No record of the marriage has yet been found. A statement given in the pension appication of Isom by the brother of Josephine Boren states that, "I. C. Frier ran off with Henry Jordon's wife."

The 1870 census lists I. C. Frier age 28, Mary J. age 23 and step-daughter, Mary M age 2, as living together in Elizabethtown, Denton Countty, Texas. They lived there until 1873 when they moved to Crawford, Waco County, Texas.

Isom's first son, Julius Conway Frier, was born 27 sept 1870 in Bell County, Texas...( note: they couldn't have lived in elizabethtown until 1873 if julius was born in bell county in 1870.) John Martin frier was born 4 January 1872 in Bell County. during the next two years, the family lived in Waco, Hamilton & Richland Springs. Two daughters, Ida & rebecca were born during that time. He settled in brady, McCulloch County ffrom 1875 - 1883. he ran a grocery store and retail whiskey outlet. Three other children, Arthur E; Lulla K; and George W, were born while they were there.

By 1883 he had the urge to move again. He sold out all of his holdings, bought 1700 head of sheep which he wanted to take into New Mexico. Preparations were made and the trip was started in 1884. This would be the first herd of sheep to be taken into cattle country around Carlsbad, Lincoln County, New Mexico. Interesting tales of this journey can be found in "Pioneer Memories" by John M Frier. The family lived at Lookout, near the Blue River Springs, a few miles from the Carlsbad Caverns. Annie Ella was born here in 1886.

By 1887 the family had moved to San Elizario, near El Paso, Texas. They were apparently destitute with many of the family ill. Isom's two daughter's, Ida & Rebecca died within two days of one another...2nd & 4th of August 1887. His wife and step-daughter, Molly Holland, died the following year in July, of typhoid fever. He was left with two orphan grand-daughters beside his own children ages 2; 4; 6; & 9. John & Julius were the only ones old enough to be of much help. The grand-daughters were adopted by a wealthy railroad man as isom was unable to care for them. Their father had been killed in 1884 shortly after their arrival in New Mexico. Isom and his children returned to Callahan, Texas in 1889 and then on to Abilene in 1890. He married Sarah Neville in 1891.

He lost two sons in 1896. It seems that the boys had been hired to help take a herd of horses to southern Texas. The horses were apparently stolen, and the rangers were soon in pursuit of them. The Rangers caught up with them in the Davis Mountains near Ft Stockton, both the Frier boys, Julius and Arthur were killed by the Rangers. their bodies were taken to Ft Stockton where they were buried. Isom was despondent for some time after this incident.

Isom and his family with Sarah are listed in the 1900 census of Abilene, Taylor County, Texas. he lived there until 1901, Stephensville in 1904, Delean in 1906 and Munday in 1907. He married Margaret Rozina Crawford Wilson 11 March 1908 and moved back to Abilene where he stayed until his death in 1921.

Isom had tried for years to obtain a disability pension from the government for disability caused by illness contracted during the Civil War. A large file was created by the agent assigned to investigate his claim, as he sought reasons to deny the request. Isom was apparently a victim of rheumatoid arthritis, as he had periods when he appeared to be fine and other times when he was laid up for weeks with back pain, swollen joints and fever. There were many letters from people who knew him. There were some who called him a horse thief, and others who said he was a good hard working man. He did move about a lot and tried many different things. He was said to be a hard and aggressive man when crossed. He was finally able to collect his money for a few months before he died. He died in February 1921 at Abilene, and is buried in Merkle, Taylor County, Texas.

31 July 1888 Farmersville, Collin County, Texas by Harrison Boren "I am 44 years of age, farmer. P.O. Blue Ridge, Collin County, Texas. This clients first wife was my sister, they were married in 1867....I first knew this client just after the war, he then lived at Soloman Glenns and lived right near me for 3 or 4 years...........he farmed one year, then he went off with some horses and cattle with Henry Jordon, he is dead. (Henry Jordon) Frier now lives with Henry Jordon's widow and my sister, Frier's wife, is still alive....client only lived with my sister about one year when he left her and went off with Jordon's wife before Jordon died. Jordon then married another woman."

Family tradition says there was a child born to Josephine and Isom. I have not looked further for that child. Harriosn stated that Josephine was living at Belcherville, Montague County, Texas as Mrs Augustus Sanders ...1888

Isom was prone to "tell tales" and actual dates of some events are uncertain.

They had the following children:
164 M    i. Julius "Jude" Conway FRIER was born on 27 Sep 1870 in Benton, Bell Co., Texas and died on 28 Sep 1896 in Fort Stockton, Pecos Co., Texas.
Notes for JULIUS "JUDE" CONWAY FRIER:
Isam had sons Julius Conway, John Martin & Arthur. John was my grandfather. Hilga can tell you a lot of his stories. He & Arthur was sent to Yuma in 1890, Horse thiefs. In 1896, Julius (Jude) & Arthur (16) stole a race horse. The Texas Rangers, John Reynold Hughes, hunted them down. Jude was killed, plus a sidekick. Arthur was told to surrender. He came out with his hands behind his head & when he got in sight, he started shooting. This is the story in the report. John Hughes might have decided to save the expense of a trial & an extra grave & shot him. Things like that happen now-a-days.

We wondered where Grandpa was when this was going on. He was known for liking other peoples horses. My daughter sent to the New Mexico Archives & got another prison record, He and a man named Chamberlain tried to rob a mail car. He was sent to Colorado State Prison for two years for cutting a mail bag. They never got off the train. While there I guess he decided crime didn't pay, he became very religious and later married with 6 kids. He let his wife & children support him. He didn't study all the Bible, apparently. At one time he was with the Hole in wall gang, brothers, too. I can't remember which gang Hilga said he was with. He told them he went up there to talk Jude into living straight. Ha. He was sent to Co. after that cause Jude was dead.

HORSE THIEF CANYON....
Horse Thief Canyon begins three miles southeast of Fort Davis in southeastern Jeff Davis County (at 30°35' N, 103°47' W) and runs northeast for twenty-two miles to its mouth on Limpia Creek, three miles west of the Pecos county line and eighteen miles northeast of Fort Davis (at 30°44' N, 103°36' W). The area's rugged terrain is surfaced by shallow, stony soils that support Mexican buckeye, walnut, persimmon, desert willow, scrub brush, and sparse grasses. The canyon was named for an 1896 incident in which two young brothers named Frier, accomplices of a man named Walt Frazier who had stolen some horses from a ranch near Fort Stockton, were killed in a shootout with Texas Rangers qv there. Frazier escaped through the canyon that now bears his name but was later captured and imprisoned.

Notes for JOSEPH HASTINGS: Cathye (Jonathan) Hendrix (hendrixj@nichols.com) supplied the information for the family of Joseph Hastings.

Joe was a logger with three small children to raise. The three children basically raised themselves. They were left at home during the day while their father went to the woods to work. In later years Joe lived with his children and died at the home of his daughter Susie.

Joseph married Iona "Oney" BURKS, daughter of Elmore BURKS and Betty VAUGHN. (Iona "Oney" BURKS was born in 1876, died in 1901 in Jackson Co., Alabama and was buried in 1901 in Gold Cemetery, Jackson Co., Alabama.)

Notes for MARY MYRTLE HASTINGS: Little is know of Myrtle Hastings who died of spinal meningitis at about age 13.

Here is the story about Myrtle:

My grandmother (Myrtle was her oldest sister) always said that Myrtle was "attacked". That was all she said. I don't think she knew any more than that because Grandma was a baby when Myrtle died or Grandma wasn't born yet. People would not continue the story when my Grandmother and her sister and brother were around, apparently. But it was repeated within the family--that's how I found out about it. Legend also says that she died of spinal minengidious at a young age.

I talked to a Hasting researcher who knew a story about a young Hasting girl but didn't have the girl's name. We talked and decided that our stories matched and I had the name of the girl--Myrtle.

Here is the story:

Myrtle went to spend the night with a friend or relative. She may have been planning to spend one night or several days. I don't know. A friend or relative (I think a relative) was suppose to bring Myrtle home when it was time for her to return. She and this man got in a wagon to go home but before they got home he raped her. This is all I know. As far as I know nothing was done to the man as far as punishment.

I wonder if she actually died from spinal minengidious. I wonder if she died from her injuries. Spinal minengidious is very contagious and I never heard of anyone else in the family dying from it. Myrtle's brother and sister were very young when she died and Grandma was a baby. It seems to me that they would be very likely to catch it. These are just questions that I have in my head.

Missouri Ann Baker is thought to be part Cherokee Indian. Her Indian name was Winney Washie. When her grandaughter Dorothy Keener was born she wanted her son Edgar to name Dorothy after her using her Indian name Winney Washie. Edgar's wife Jessie refused!

I find absolutely no evidence to back up the thought Missouri Ann was Indian .. if she was then so was the rest of the Baker clan and they were not.

It was her first husband Zedock Wright Poindexter who was part Indian his brother William Archibald Poindexter tried to document their Indian heritage and apply for the Cherokee Rolls but was denied. ( Cherokee Application # 7282 )

Missouri married Zedock Wright POINDEXTER, son of Zedock Wright POINDEXTER and Sarah Jane ANDERSON, on 17 Jan 1867 in Dade Co., Missouri. (Zedock Wright POINDEXTER was born on 25 Nov 1847 in Dade Co., Missouri and died on 18 Feb 1887 in Fulton or Nevada Co., Missouri.)

In a letter of May 1975 from Clara Baker Cook she described Tom Baker as follows:

"Uncle Tom took his family responsibilities as lightly as the freckles on a little boys nose. Moved to Indian territory and lived like an Indian. Seemingly couldn't have cared about Sunday School and church or caring for the needs of Aunt Ellen and the children."

It would seem that Tom Baker was an outdoorsman. An avid Coon hunter that let nothing get in the way of his own pursuits. His family left to fend for themselves for days at a time while he and the Stevens boys were "hunting." After the death of Grandma Ellen, he went to live at the home of David Stevens and this is where he died.

Died at age 57 after being struck by train near Lockwood, Missouri

Lockwood, Dade Co., Missouri Lockwood Luminary 4 Dec 1914

Accidently Killed ...

Train number 106, or the early morning flyer, killed James M. Baker of Everton, just off the bridge 11/4 mile east of town Sunday morning. He had come in here on the midnight train Saturday night and had attempted to go to the home of some friends he had living within the vicinity when he was killed. How he was killed is a mystery, but it is presumed he had attempted to cross the bridge and seeing he could not make the distance, sat down on the end of the tie outside the rails. The step in front of the engine was bent and it is the supposition that this is what struck him. The ties were covered with blood and the body was found at almost fifty feet from this place. His head was crushed, brains and skull along the rails, his heart and lungs almost out of his body and bones crushed.

His body was found about 8:30 and under the direction of Coroner Russell brought here and prepared for burial. His brother Andy Baker, of Everton, came after the body and took it to his home on an early train Monday. The engineer in charge of the train said he was making a distance of 50 mph at that time and knew nothing of the accident until he reached KC. The deceased was a man 57 years 11 months and 29 days old.

Notes for JOHN FRANCIS HASTINGS: PIONEER CITIZEN CLAIMED BY DEATH.....

J. F. Hastings died at his home 3 miles north of town Saturday morning...was a long and patient suffer.

Saturday forenoon marked the passing of another of our pioneer citizen, J. F. Hastings, aged 61, son of the late WIlliam T. Hastings, who but so recently passed away at his home in Everton, received the final summons to pass to the Great Beyond. Mr Hastings had been a long and patient sufferer, having been afflicted with tubercular troubles for many months, and for the past several months unable to leave his room. He was not even able to attend the funeral of his father who died last January 27th. Mr Hastings came to Missouri with his father in 1850 and resided here continuously since that time. He, like his father, figured prominetly in the making of Dade County History in the pioneer days as well as in late years. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock from the Hampton Church in the presense of a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends, immediately after which interment was in the Hampton Cemetery. John Francis Hastings was born in Chickasaw County, Mississippi, December 24, 1848: and died at his home near Everton, Missouri, September 17, 1910, at 11:30 am. Aged sixty one years, nine months and seven days. He was converted and united with the Old Missionary Baptist Church, August 1868, and remained a faithful and exemplary member until until about twenty eight years ago, when he, with his wife, joined the Methodist Episcopal Church South, at the old Grove, or Sinking Creek Church. He was married to Miss Margaret Walton, August 17, 1871. to them were born eight children; Mrs Janie Crane; Mrs Belle Bowman; William C; Elzada Grant; Miss Pina; James T; and Miss Ethel. Two of these, Elzada and James, preceeded him to the better world. The remaining six were with him much of the time during his last illness, and did much to relieve and comfort him. His wife and two daughters, Pina and Ethel, who are still at home, were his constant attendents, and were ever ready and willing to administer to his wants. he frequently spoke of having to leave them, and how he wished them to live, and how he wantecthem to take care of their home and keep it. He also gave directions about his burial, how he wanted his remains put away. He told friends last Sunday, that his sainted mother, father, sister and brothers, who had preceeded him to the good world were around his bed singing hymms of praise. Besides his own family he leaves three brothers; S Buster; William T; and W. Hagler Hastings; and two sister; Mrs Belle Baker; and Miss Mae Hastings. All were present during his last illness and death, except William T. who lives in Washington, D. C. Brother Hastings was one of our very best citizens and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. He now rests from his labors and his works do follow him. Funeral services were held by the writer in the Hampton Church in the presense of a very large audience of neighbors, friends, and relatives who sincerely deplore his departure. May the sustaining grace of our Heavenly Father, in a very specia lmanner, be with his bereft wife and children.

W. R. Russell

( There were 8 children but only 7 listed here... Soloman Samuel Jehu Hastings )
