in Peggs, Cherokee Co., Oklahoma and was buried in New Home Cemetery, Peggs,
Cherokee Co., Oklahoma. Another name for William was Willie CLIPPER.
I've been told a couple different versions of what caused Willie's
death.
Willie's step dad, Buck was in the barn and Willie had gone out there
to see him, running up behind the horse that kicked him causing severe
head injuries.
Another one is ... Buck had gone to town in the wagon to bring back
supplies. Willie spied the wagon coming up the lane and ran out to meet
his daddy, Willie was climbing up the side of the wagon when Buck reached
over and knocked him off causing him to fall under the wagon wheel and
being run over.
Willie's head injuries were so severe he only lived a few days before
giving up. (This version was given by Ethel Baker Hobbs, who stated she
was there.)
Daisey also married Harland LASLEY, son of Henry LASLEY and
Unknown, on 23 Mar 1903 in Indian Territory, Oklahoma. (Harland LASLEY
was born on 27 Jul 1875 in Columbus, Cherokee Co., Kansas and died on 17

Harlan Lasley 67, known to his many friends as "Buck," died at his home
eight miles west of this city Sunday. He suffered a stoke of paralysis
six weeks ago and had since been bedfast.

Mr & Mrs Henry Lasley. At the time of his death he had attained the
age of 67 years, 6 months and 21 days. He was united in marriage to Miss
Mamie Boles in early life, and to this union two children were born, both
of whom preceeded him in death. His wife passed away in July 1897.
On Mar 23, 1903, he was married to Miss Daisy Baker, of Peggs, Okla

friends.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon from the Burns Funeral
Home, with the Rev Fred McPhail, pastor of the Baptist Church, officiating.
Music was furnished by Misses Rita Mae Spence and Freda Mae Corn. Burial
was in Pine Grove Cemetery.
The Watering Hole
Buck & Daisy Lasley came back to Missouri during the winter of 1908
- 09. Getting as far as Joplin to camp at the old "watering hole" on 12th
Street until spring before traveling on to Howell County where they lived
the remainder of their married lives.
A Panther Screams
Coming to Missouri and settling in the woods near Willow Springs in
Howell County was a choice location as grandpa was an avid coon hunter.
He was out hunting one evening while grandma was fixing supper when she
saw the dogs come running into the yard and knew grandpa would not be far
behind. Directly, here come grandpa at a dead run .. into the house and
fell across the bed and went to snoring. Shortly grandma heard a panther
scream and hurried to shut the shutters on the windows as there were no
screens. She knew what had happened, the dogs had high tailed it to the
house when they smelled the panther leaving grandpa in their wake. The
panther was so close grandpa thought he would not make it to the door.
He was nearly scared to death.

PEGGS, OKLAHOMA, WIPED OUT BY STORM WHICH KILLS LARGE NUMBER OF INHABITANTS
__________________________
Bodies Being Taken From Ruins By Rescuers Little Town Is Off Railroad
And Hard To Reach By Wire.
----------------------------------------------------
Muskogee, Oklahoma, May 3
Thirty seven bodies have been recovered by rescuers from wrecked houses
in the storm demolished town of Peggs, according to a telephone report
from Tahlequah. This information was brought from Peggs by the first man
to arrive from that town today.
Twenty of these bodies are reported to have been taken form one building.
The little village of Peggs is on the northern border of Cherokee County
about 60 miles east of Tulsa. The place is off the railroad and situated
in the foothills. Those familiar with the roads in the vicinity say it
is practically impossible to reach Peggs by motor car.
The Tulsa Tribune started a newspaper man by airplane to the stricken
district this morning. Reports to the Muskogee Times-Democrat from Locust
Grove and Tahlequah where dead and injured from Peggs are being taken,
said that not a house was left standing in Peggs. A special train carrying
doctors and nurses and equipment left Muskogee for Peggs this morning.
All doctors and nurses in Tahlequah also have gone. Practically every store
in Tahlequah, which is the county seat of Cherokee County have closed and
several hundred people have gone to Peggs to do rescue work.
Direct communication with the stricken town was impossible this morning,
as all wires from Muskogee to Peggs are down. Tahlequah, county seat of
Cherokee Co., fifteen miles south of Peggs is the nearest railroad town
in the storm area.
John Littlefield, his wife and six of their seven children were among
those killed in the storm, a report to Tahlequah said. The only physician
in the town, Dr. W..R. Hill was also killed. Fourty four bodies had been
recovered at Peggs by rescue parties, up until noon today. The dead from
the debris are: John Littlefield, Willie Littlefield, Lizzie Littlefield,
Jimmy Littlefield, Soggy Littlefield, Dan Littlefield, "Baby" Littlefield,
Jack Wagner, Paul Kenyon, Mrs Paul Kenyon, "Baby" Kenyon, Dr I Hill, Jim
Frank, Dora Frank, Monroe Frank, Virgie Frank, N. L. Stevens, Roscoe Stevens,
Sam Stevens, Mary Stevens, Forbes Stevens, Roy Stevens, "Baby" Stevens,
John Stevens, Mrs Jno Stevens, Mrs Wadkins, Wadkins Child, Will Bleveins,
Mrs Willie Blevins, "Baby" Blevins, ? Ford, "Baby' Ford, Jack Wilkerson,
(There are several names here I can't read from the newspaper as it
had been folded and the crease obliterated the names. Bessie Franks who
was eight months pregnant, and two youngest daughters Cora Franks and Maudie
Franks died that day.)
When the rescuers arrived in Peggs they found only a heap of twisted,
mud-splattered debris. A heavy rain and hail accompanied the storm. When
the workers began collecting the bodies many were so covered with mud that
they had to be washed off before identity could be established.
Collecting The Dead
The dead were collected in shelters left by tangled walls and roofs.
Twenty were piled in one nook while the searching parties ranged the immediate
vicinity. Doctors, nurses and assistants worked ( ? ) since early morning,
caring for the wounded. None of the injured has reached Tahlequah, but
a number are on the way. Due to the rough country and poor roads it will
likely be late this evening before they can be placed in the Tahlequah
hospital.
By a freak of the storm a small frame shack, uninhabited, was left standing
in the heart of the town, while brick buildings housing many persons was
razed. The Peggs school house, a concrete building, was crushed like an
egg shell.

Notes for CLARA BAKER: LETTER'S FROM CLARA
I became acquainted with Clara through correspondence early on in my
family research. She was the only daughter of Andrew & Belle Hastings
Baker. Her parents being first cousins. Clara married Dwight Cook and they
enjoyed many long years in a happy companionable marriage. There were no
children. Clara was a school teacher, beginning her career in a one room
school house in Dade County. She and Dwight later moved to Lebanon where
Dwight's was from, there they stayed the remainder of their lives.
In my early days of searching for clues to family, Clara was a tireless
helper. If she didn't have the answer, she would point me to one who might.
I owe her a debt of gratitude that can not be paid. I only hope she knew
how much I appreciated her time and guidance. The following excerpts were
taken from a dozen or more letters she wrote during our correspondence
concerning her thoughts and what she was told of her Baker family. Being
a school teacher, paper was always a precious commodity, Clara never wasted
paper, most of her letters are written on whatever was handy. I will omit
the repeated birth dates and names as they are all included in the history
for the Baker - Hastings clans. I would like to share these with you and
hope you enjoy them as I have. (Sandra Buckley .. May 1998)
Thursday Morn 6 March 1975 Lebanon, Missouri
John & Martha had buried their mates before coming to Missouri.
Her father John HATHAWAY Hastings (a trader) is buried near Humboldt, Kansas,
born 1796 North Carolina? I've heard my father (A. A. Baker) say many times,
"There are no Baker's a kin to me but my children and my brothers and their
children, my father had no brothers." (Lately I wonder if he had brothers
who didn't leave Miss - Ala or Tenn.) My father was the baby of three sets
of children and a pet of them all. There was good a good brother-sister
fellowship of the three sets of children. I can read print only with a
magnifying glass, so if I copy anything it's a tedious and maybe inacerate
acet. (Account). Some dates have to be copied, what is in my mind is easier
to get on paper. Clara B Cook Lebanon, Mo.
I have 3 living Baker cousins (6 March 1975) Ross Baker and his sister
Ethel, Hazel Beasley, uncle Jim's baby child. I have 3 on moms side. We
celebrated our Golden Anniversary in 1965 and got out Eastern Star Pins
2 years ago with a nice celebration. We have no children, left farm 8 years
ago because of our advanced age. My husband was born and raised in Laclede
County and there was a large family of them. Two lovely widow sisters look
after us. I gave up car driving years ago. My oldest brother, Herbert,
died 64 years ago yesterday, baby brother Earl, died 14 years ago April
15th. Dwight has gotten very forgetful and hears bad. My eyesight is bad
and hearing good. He retired at age 80. Tax Consultant after 28 years in
our home. As many as 500 in year. (No wonder he's forgetful.) Lovingly
Hurriedly, Clara P.S. Herbert and I were born in the same house grandpa
died in at Everton ... 1886 December. Gladys Nelson, a widow, not to well,
has done extensive research on J. Baker, census, etc. Le Roy Gallaugher
isn't well, his research is more verbal and cemetery records. Gladys team
mate on the genealogy died and she isn't doing it on same big scale but
she is very authentic and well informed. She says the Mormons have name
having the best records in U.S. Mary Ellen seems very knowledgeable and
enthusiastic, I'm expecting her to get some results. Gladys found a John
Zachariah Baker in Alabama who was a Baptist Preacher that outwardly appears
to be the right John. This is a very messy outfit, figures and dates &
poor vision is nerve wracking.
11 March 1975 Lebanon, Missouri Tuesday Noon
In case you are confused over the relatives my father and mother were
first cousins! (Mom's explanation, "You didn't have much choice where country
was thinly settled - and where the select families only had girls.") I'm
the only living Baker born and raised in Everton ( in home where grandpa
Baker died Feb 1886) In fact I was more rooted in Everton than any Baker
I can recall. I was in and out of Everton but my folks were a permanent
fixture from 1902 to the day of their deaths. They were in Springfield
2 or 3 years and the remainder of their life near Everton. ( One summer
in Carthage, Panic of 93, when my dad lost his job in Springfield where
he clerked for Hardesty Bakery, largest Bakery in town.) At present I am
half-heartily pursuing record of grandpa Bakers land ownership in Lawrence
County (1856) This is Gladys idea that we might find an initial with the
John Baker or some clue to identify him. Harley Baker (Uncle Zack's grandson)
Miller, Mo has a friend in the courthouse at Mt Vernon who might run the
abstract - deeds and come up with a clue. Harley was surprised that I thought
Uncle Zack's father ever lived in Lawrence County near Sycamore. Sycamore
was a neighborhood church and school community. Grandpa is buried Sycamore
Cemetery and grandma at Shiloh. (Mutual agreement.) She was not quite in
her teens (grandma Martha) when her mother died and was mother to younger
children. Had a little book learning that ended when her mom died.
24 March 1975 Monday Morn
Maybe you wouldn't find anything new on Hastings. I have births, marriages
and deaths of sisters and brothers if you want them. All the sisters except
Aunt Sarah Prather (Pineville, Mo) and Aunt Martha B, went to California
in late 1850's and never returned. I repeat .. there are NO Baker's a kin
to us except Zack's, Porter's, Tom's and Uncle Jim's.
(I'm going to include this list of names as you may see a clue I missed
... Sandy.)
Porter Baker wife Mat Parnell John ... Bertha Jim ... Betty Maude ...
single Murph ... Wolf Adah ... Lamb
John & Bertha are buried at Sycamore, Jim married in Fairland, Okla.
I never knew the children of any except Irma & Effie, daughters of
John & Bertha, there was a son or two. Murph had a son Cecil who did
something very praiseworthy which my brothers related to me a number of
years ago. They lived at Ash Grove. (No mention of what he done.) Aunt
Mo had 3 Poindexter children, Sally, Corda and Zack, 1 Keener, (Edgar).
Aunt Minerva had Willie, Mary, Fanny, Versa, Arch, Hubert & Clema Dilday.
Aunt Harriet had moved to Texas after she was married to George Smith,
a boy our grandpa Baker raised. I never knew any of her children.
13 April 1975 Sunday P.M. Lebanon, Mo
I was born in Nov 1886 in same house in Everton where grandpa died.
I doubt if he left a will. He probably buried money if he had any. But
he left 5 or 6 hundred dollars with Uncle Zack for him to provide for his
step-mother. Martha McCord Baker (Patty was her nick-name) Her money was
gone long before she died but Uncle Zack continued giving her money. She
lived with her widowed daughter Mary Bailey Craig Swift - mostly - she
would spend weeks at a time with my father and mother.
April 1975 Thursday Nite (Food Day)
Franklin Bailey was shot in War time. He was hiding out but a bushwhacker
or someone saw his white shirt front and killed him. I believe he had come
home from war ( a homesick boy, maybe.) He was the only brother and you
can imagine how sad his sisters were. I don't know where the home was,
could have been in Lawrence County. Somewhere I have some facts Gladys
got in library reading that William Zachariah Baker was a Baptist Preacher
in Alabama, maybe before statehood. B. Church Association Organizer. Uncle
Zack had a brother Will (I think) who had a son Bill, one wonders if William
could have been part of John Bakers name. Grandpa Baker moved from near
Shiloh to Everton after papa and momma were married. For they bought the
property where my parents lived and all lived together. Herbert and I were
born there in 85 and 86 and grandpa died there in 86.
10 May 1975 Saturday Morn
Yes, Ingalls was a boy stillborn, Frankie 6 months old buried at Sinking
Creek, Everton. My Baker feelings were always so mixed with sadness and
embarrassment! When we first moved back to Everton about 1902 Aunt Janie
and children were living in Everton trying to make a living washing. Uncle
Jim was a good man who took to liquor and discouragement. ( He was always
affectionate with his children. ) He lived here, there and everywhere.
Except in his own home. Darling Clossy quit her job in K.C. (domestic worker)
and joined her mom, always helping her. One time my mom saved a few dozen
eggs and sent them to town by dad for pennies to buy us big kids Christmas
candy. Uncle Jim had been on a drunk, dad took him to a restaurant and
paid for him a meal with egg money. Mom may have cried but never scolded.
My dad was star route mail carrier and we moved from grandpa Hastings big
log house. (He had a nice new 2 story house now) This is William Thomas
Hastings .. S.B.) Uncle Jim spent winter at dads and in spring papa hired
the house painted instead of telling brother Jim to do it. Jim & Janey
hadn't lived together for years, she moved to Greenfield as her daughter
Stella operated good restaurant there and there would be more good paying
laundry. Janey had a neighbor who had an old bachelor brother that they
got Clossy married to. Her real lover was in medical school and she felt
so un-educated and socially unqualified to be his bride. (He was a Lockwood
young man.) He was shocked to know his Clossy was married. She raised 7
nice children, the youngest was killed in Burma the second world war. Is
buried National Cemetery in Springfield. Uncle Tom took his family responsibilities
as lightly as the freckles on a little boys nose. Moved to Indian Territory
and lived like an Indian seemingly. Couldn't have cared less about Sunday
School and caring for the needs of Aunt Ellen and the children how Ross
and Laura did so well is a 9 day wonder. Aunt Minerva and Aunt Mo were
good but not very responsible home wise. Little or no ambition for church
or education but beautifully clean with everything wherever. Uncle Porter
was more ambitious (and polished) Aunt Mat was a lazy-pipe smoking rocking
chair companion, ridiculed his nice behavior and wouldn't send children
to school because they were poorly dressed and the other children made
fun of them. Which wasn't true, they had as good as the other poor citizens.
You can see I don't have much happy childhood memories with my Bakers.
We were real good friends, Clossy said she wished her mom was like Aunt
Bell. Her mother remarked to Clossy that she had not smiled for years and
grandma Baker one time said, "I don't know as I ever called one of my children
honey."
21 May 1975 Friday Morn Lebanon, Mo
I didn't tell you that the two grave markers beside Ingalls stone at
Shiloh were Uncle Jim and Aunt Janey's babies. One was buried there before
Ingalls and the other a few years later. She was (Clara Dell) "Little Dell"
only a few months old. They also buried 2 infants near Everton, their graves
have no formal markings.
28 June 1975 Saturday
I think I know where Tom & Ellen's children were born. Tom and Jim
lived in the two big (double) log rooms. I remember being there (I was
possibly 5) a mile or 2 north of Shiloh. The land has been owned by Burton's
for years. Willard Burton owns it now. ( John & Martha's home before
moving to Everton.) Tom & Ellen moved to Indian Territory about 1892.
I'm kinda like my parents about hunting the family tree. You may find
some hanging from a tree, a horse thief or something. Just spend our time
being good ancestors for our posterity. We owe much just for the space
we occupy! Benjamin Franklin said, " The tragedy of life is we grow old
to soon and grow wise to late." (Coppers Weekly)
June 1976 Lebanon, Mo
(Clara had been quite ill during the winter of 1975-76 and was contemplating
going into a nursing home as not to be such a burden on the two nieces
who cared for her and Dwight. They were getting up in years themselves.)
Yes, I knew Aunt Ellen was a poor little orphan girl she was such a
favorite of my moms. Uncle Tom had gone to Indian territory while I was
a pre-schooler I think. They visited back in Dade County 1901 or 02 in
a covered wagon. Mom wanted Aunt Ellen to move back so they could visit
see each another. Poor little dear said they had lived among the Indians
in such poverty that they better just go on back and live like the Indians.
My mom never let poverty get her down. She held her head high but humbly.
Church and school always uppermost. Finally papa caught on. About Uncle
Jim, early in moms married life he came to talk to her about his sad predicament
at home. Aunt Janey told him she never had loved him, that her mother (Jane
Bell) had talked her into marrying him as his father was a good provider
and she would be better off. However they weren't separated permanently
until after Hazel's birth about 1902-03. Hunch back Chloe stayed with papa
and momma and went to Everton school with us. Clossy was engaged to marry
John Buser a Lockwood boy who was in medical school in St Louis. She married
John Carns of Bona 1905-06.
Back to Uncle Jim. He was kinda a wondering Jew, was living at Widow
Wisehearts south of Everton when he was killed. He had gone on midnight
train to Lockwood. Walking trestles at S.S. at Presbyterian Church . (John
Bakers) home. John was Uncle Porters oldest son..(good looking and lazy)
lovely wife Bertha and children. Mike Howard, (local young man) came to
church where I was teaching class (of kids) and got me. Told me Uncle Jim
had been killed. I went to the telephone office and called my good old
dad. The mail was carried every day in those days. Mom was in Greenfield
with a sick friend. Papa had Barker & Wheelers of Everton take over
burial. He was brought to dads home in Everton early Monday morning. Old
lady Burlison said Jim Baker died with a liquor bottle in his pocket. Moma
said, "Yes, and it came from Tom Burlison's liquor shop." (Her son in Everton.)
The funeral cost $35 (regular price) The children paid papa not long after.
Uncle Porter was the proud one if his wife hadn't ridiculed him. She was
a happy go lucky - lazy rocking chair -pipe smoking soul. Didn't send children
to school as they were made fun of. John, Little Jim, Maude, Murph and
Adah. Johns wife was Bertha, a lovely woman and children. Jims wife was
a sweet little Indian girl, their family is near Afton - Fairland. Maude
died with TB when grown. Adah married a Mr Lamb. At school a little Wilson
boy said to his teacher, " Did you know Adah Baker had a little "Lamb"
this morning?" This isn't for history. I'm like mom, don't tell the bad
things, (or claim kin) to much. And appreciate but don't boast about the
good things. Aunt Mo horrified dad by marrying and going off to Indian
Territory while Uncle Dock was still alive in asylum. Her children, Sally,
Zack and Corda and later our dear Edgar Keener. Minerva Dilday, beautiful
house keeper (nothing scarcely to keep.) Willie, Mary, Fanny, Versa, Arch,
Eddie, Hubert & Clem. I don't know if any of them are alive. Uncle
Dave Dilday a hard hard working man. After his death Aunt Minerva preferred
to live here and yonder even though Hubert was still at home and working.
She lived at dads much of the time. Minerva is buried at Claremore near
Aunt Mo.
12 March 1976 Saturday P.M.
Old age has really caught up with me in more ways than one. Yes, Wm
T Hastings is moms dad. He was notary, a lawyer, (Greenfield) said Wm T
Hastings name was on more legal documents than any one person. He was administrator
to widows and orphans, church official. Funny he never gave his famous
namesake his house. When mom named it to him he replied, " He didn't stay
with me on the farm until he was 21." (as the other sons) and that was
a custom then. His fathers name was John HOLLOWAY Hastings. I think he's
buried near Humboldt, Kansas. Seemingly grandpa Hastings (William Thomas
Hastings) was not impressed with his sister Martha's husband. Maybe because
he permitted his children to be to careless of their obligations to church
and school for their children. I've wondered.

Notes for ELZADA MELCENA HASTINGS: MRS GRANT IS BURNED........
Mrs Don Grant, living at 1212 Nevada Ave. was burned so badly with coal
oil this morning that she will die. The woman had started to prepare the
noon meal for her husband and after building her fire found it was not
burning well. Wishing to hasten it as she was late in her dinner preparations,
she picked up a five gallon can of coal oil and began pouring oil onto
the fire. There was a loud explosion and the woman was instantly enveloped
in flames. She rushed out of the house dropping down in the snow and rolling
over and over. Her clothing was a ball of flames and she screamed in pain.
J. J. Erion, the delivery man from Foggy and Roe, was at the house of C.
E. Davenport next door. He ran to where the woman lay, pulling off his
coat as he ran and wrapped it around her, smothering the flame about her
shoulders and putting out the rest of the fire with snow. When the flames
were exstinguished, Mrs Grant arose and being wrapped in a blanket which
Mrs Davenport had brought, she was assisted to a buggy. The womans clothes
were burned almost completely from her body, dropping off her (like torn
paper) as she asked for her husband. She told some of the people where
to send for him. "I know I will die," she said, looking piteously about
her at her friends and neighbors who had gathered. She could not cry, her
poor blisterted eyes being beyond shedding tears and her face was a mass
of burns. At no time however, did she loose consciousness and showed a
wonderful lot of nerve and strength. Dr Ben Beshoar along with Dr Howard,
were summoned and arrived at the house in a few minutes. Examination showed
that the womans body was burned nearly all over, the flesh being cooked
in places. Her throat and nose were badly scorched and her chest cooked
nearly to her lungs and she must have inhaled a great deal of flame. The
doctors do not think she will live more than a few hours. In the meantime,
the house had caught on fire and the flames were getting a good headway.
Jimmy McBride, one of the fireboys, was out exercising a fire horse and
was passing the place when the woman ran out the front door. He ran to
the woman and assisted her to the buggy of Carmichael and then turned in
the fire alarm. The fire wagon was obliged to go around by Animas Street
to get to the house and kitchen was badly charred by the time they got
there. Quick work prevented the fire from spreading and the kitchen was
the only part of the house damaged. Mr Grant is a workman in the employ
of West Block. He was frantic with grief when told of the awful catastrophe
that had overtaken his little home, and ran nearly all the way there, only
to find his wife dying. There are two little children in the family, both
of them tots. Although the elder one is old enough to go the primary grades
in school. One of the children was at home with it's mother this morning
but was in the front part of the house and did not know what had happened
until the house was on fire and it's mother suffering great agony from
her burns. Mrs Grant is a young woman and has always been a devoted wife
and mother. She is suffering great agony from her terrible burns, but is
enduring with wonderful stoicism.
