I would try to sneak her in the house after dad went to bed and let her sleep with us. She was my dog and would do as I told her. I gave her a bath one day and she took distemper and died. I buried her out back of the house under the sage brush. I've never owned another pet sense, not one that was mine. Grandma worked all her life, after going to Idaho she went to work in the beet .. onion.. potato's .. and hop fields where she worked until she started with Simplots, ( a food processing plant.) While with Simplots she developed a serious skin condition thought to have been caused by potato poisoning. I wonder if it was from the chemicals put on the potato's? Before leaving Missouri and after quitting Simplots she worked for Laundry companies. Back breaking work. Grandma loved to fish .. my uncle Mick had taken her fishing one week end and on their way home was in a car wreck. Grandma's leg was crushed up in under the dash board, she lost the leg below the knee. She didn't let it stop her. She soon had her "wooden leg" and could get around as she chose.
